As you start a new website, you will have to look for an affordable web hosting company to give your new site a home on its servers and provide the other hardware and software needed to get your site live and online.

There are a lot of different web hosting companies out there, each of which offers a different array of packages and service options. Before you even begin looking for a web hosting company for your site, you need to sit down and carefully consider exactly what features you want your website to be able to offer.

You may need video or audio content on your site, or allow users to upload these kinds of files. These are large files, so you'll need plenty of bandwidth for your website. Go through each feature you want and think about what this means in terms of your web hosting package (if you're not so tech-savvy, run this list by a friend who knows a bit more about websites). Finding a good deal on web hosting begins with knowing what you're looking for.

There are free hosting options available, but these are not really suitable if your website is for a business. These sites offer a very limited feature set and typically a very low bandwidth limit as well. Besides this, having a freely hosted website gives visitors to your site an unflattering impression of your company. Unless you just want to use free web hosting as a sort of training ground for evaluating different web hosting features, avoid using these hosts for your business. If you are building a site for personal use however, it is fine to use free web hosting if you want to save a little money on this cost.

There is also the options of dedicated web hosting versus shared hosting to think about. Dedicated hosting works better for businesses, since you have your own server at the hosting company. With shared hosting, your site has to compete for system resources with other websites.

This is also not really ideal for a business website; you can run into difficulties due to the actions of other websites hosted on the same server.

For instance, if a site sharing the website with yours is using too much of the server's resources, this can slow down your site's performance - not ideal for a business website. It is a better idea to go for dedicated hosting instead.

You also need to think about the very important topic of technical support. Your website needs to have highly skilled and responsive support and service behind it. In case of any technical problems, you need to know that your site will be up and running again in short order. You should find out how the web hosting company you are considering performs in this department by talking to some of their current customers about their experiences with the customer service and technical support departments.

There are other considerations which should go into your choice of web hosting; uptime, the operating system used on the server (Windows vs. Linux) and others. However, the tips given here should get you started thinking about your needs for a web hosting company and get you on your way to finding a web hosting company which is right for you.
